Recently called to the Bar?

As a lawyer recently Called to the Ontario Bar for the first time, you need to advise LAWPRO of your current practising status. After your Call, you will receive a welcome package in the mail from LAWPRO with instructions on completing your filing online at www.lawpro.ca.

How to apply for insurance (if you will be engaged in the private practice of law):

  1. Once you have your Law Society Number and your LAWPRO welcome package, go to MY LAWPRO and click on "Apply for Professional Liability Insurance". Please note that you will not be able to complete the online application until LAWPRO has received your electronic file from the Law Society (approximately 2 weeks after your Call date).

  2. Although you can begin to practise once you've been Called, you will not be able to access Teranet (if needed) until your application has been processed.

  3. On a going-forward basis, ensure that you notify LAWPRO in writing of any employment/practice status changes.

  4. The by-laws of the Law Society of Upper Canada require that all Class L1 licensees annually confirm their status with LAWPRO for the purposes of professional liability insurance coverage.

If you will not be engaged in the private practice of law you need to apply for exemption from paying for LAWPRO insurance:

  1. Once you have your Law Society Number and your LAWPRO welcome package, go to MY LAWPRO and click on "Apply for an Exemption"

  2. Review the eligibility criteria for exemption and complete the requested information. Please note that you will not be able to complete the online exemption form until LAWPRO has received your electronic file from the Law Society (approximately 2 weeks after your Call date).
