Teranet, the Law Society and LPIC announce joint venture in BAR-eX
Toronto - January 31, 2001: Teranet Enterprises Inc., the Law Society of Upper Canada and the Lawyers' Professional Indemnity Company (LPIC) have signed a master agreement to be joint venture participants in BAR-eX Communications Inc. (formerly named the Lawyers' Workbench).

The three joint venture participants will work together to enhance the range of content and functionality available through the BAR-eX™ site, providing Ontario's legal profession with a new technology-based tool that offers lawyers improved communication, information flow and educational opportunities.

To support the BAR-eX portal as the preferred electronic source of services for lawyers, the Law Society and LPIC will provide the BAR-eX site with content. In return, each organization will be a five per cent shareholder in BAR-eX. The eight-person BAR-eX Board of Directors will comprise of representatives from Teranet, one representative from each of the Law Society and LPIC, and two independent members selected jointly by the three joint venture parties.

The BAR-eX web site entered its pre-launch phase at the January, 2000 Canadian Bar Association-Ontario (CBA-O) Institute. It currently offers the legal community a host of convenience services including an internet search capability through BARflyer™, Canada's only legal-specific Internet search engine; online access to government services, a current awareness service tailored to practice area, discussion forums, web mail and a career centre. At this year's CBA-O Institute, BAR-eX is launching Canada's first e-marketplace for the legal community.

From a standing start 12 months ago, the BAR-eX site now has close to 4,000 registrants and attracts over 2,500 unique users each week with over 40,000 page views - and these numbers are growing.

"Lawyers need to be able to focus on practising law and serving their clients rather than having to spend time on back office administrative issues," says Chris Valentine, Managing Director of BAR-eX Communications Inc. "BAR-eX meets this need, by providing one-stop access to a range of tools, products and resources that will help streamline the legal practice. Working with LPIC and the Law Society, we'll create an online community that provides a supportive network for lawyers."

According to Malcolm Heins, who was instrumental in LPIC's participation in the project while he was President and CEO at LPIC, the BAR-eX portal facilitates access to and use of technology by the legal profession. "At LPIC, we saw first hand the benefits of incorporating technology- based tools and solutions in law practice and have actively promoted use of these types of tools through initiatives such as TitlePLUS and practicePRO. BAR-eX is an extension of LPIC's initiatives to help lawyers access technology - and takes this strategy to a new level," says Heins, now CEO of the Law Society.

Larry Banack, a Law Society Bencher and Chair of the Law Society's Technology Task Force, calls the portal, "a unique opportunity to 'level the playing field' for sole practitioners and small to mid-sized firms. It filters and refines the oceans of information and resources available on the World Wide Web to give all members of the legal community access to the tools they need to further their educational and strategic goals."
