  • LAWPRO base premium stable for fifth consecutive year (Sept. 24, 2014)
    Strong financial results and a moderating claims count have allowed LAWPRO to hold the base premium for the mandatory insurance program at $3,350 for the fifth consecutive year. 2015 marks 20 years of LAWPRO operating primary insurance program.

TitlePLUS® moves to the Web
Purchasing title insurance just got faster and easier

January 22, 2003, Toronto, ON: TitlePLUS today announced that it will move all of its Ontario title insurance application programs to the Web, bringing the concept of a fully automated, real time real estate practice one step closer to reality.

Effective immediately, lawyers are able to go online and secure TitlePLUS title insurance coverage for residential real estate purchase transactions via a Web-based application process that takes only minutes to complete, and provides instant approval or feedback for title insurance applications.

Moving all Ontario TitlePLUS title insurance to the Web helps lawyers better serve their clients when they buy a home, makes it fast and easy for lawyers to use title insurance, and facilitates the introduction of TitlePLUS across Canada.

Over the last 18 months, TitlePLUS has launched several new Web-based initiatives as it continues to evolve:

  • LawyerMortgage enables lawyers to apply for title insurance coverage for certain mortgage/refinance transactions;
  • GoodMortgage provides online access to title insurance and document production for mortgage transactions involving specific financial institutions; and
  • NewHome is a title insurance and document production Web site for lawyers in the new home/condominium market.

The addition of the TitlePLUS purchase/sale program to the Web means all TitlePLUS Ontario programs will be accessible only via the Web after May 31, 2003. It also signals a transition from Teraview®, the Teranet-owned electronic search and registration system through which TitlePLUS has been delivered since its launch in 1997. Increased reliance on the Web as an integral part of the legal working environment played a key role in the TitlePLUS decision to develop a Web-based delivery channel for its title insurance products.

By simply completing a series of user-friendly screens, lawyers (who apply for TitlePLUS on behalf of their clients) will be able to obtain instant approval for title insurance coverage for real estate transactions, and will be able to generate all documentation related to a specific TitlePLUS insurance policy. The TitlePLUS Web site has been designed as an "intelligent" site that interfaces with pre-set TitlePLUS underwriting criteria, determines if the transaction qualifies for TitlePLUS title insurance coverage, and, in most cases, provides instant approval for the title insurance application.

"This initiative meets the needs of lawyers to be able to help their clients protect the marketability of their title; our Web-based process not only eliminates the need for someone to review and approve the title insurance application, but also lets the lawyer control the process, and determine when the policy is issued. It therefore reinforces the pivotal role that lawyers continue to play in real estate conveyancing," explains Kathleen Waters, Vice-President of TitlePLUS.

TitlePLUS will be available at titleplus.lawyerdonedeal.com on the LawyerDoneDeal.com portal, a central Web site through which lawyers will be able to undertake all aspects of a real estate transaction, including file management and document production, with optional data export to electronic registration, and instant access to financial institutions' forms and reporting requirements. LawyerDoneDeal.com is a collaboration of TitlePLUS and LawyerDoneDeal Corporation (LDD), which is affiliated with CAKEsoft Inc.

Lawyers benefit from Web-based tools and resources
The TitlePLUS programs delivered over the Internet use standard, Web-based formats and protocols with which lawyers using the Web already are familiar, providing lawyers with numerous benefits:

  • No start-up or software costs: All the "software" that lawyers need for TitlePLUS is online, so lawyers do not have to incur additional costs to get up and running.
  • No learning curve: The Web-based TitlePLUS initiatives not only use existing Web-based conventions, but also guide lawyers intuitively through the various stages in the application process. The result: Virtually any lawyer can go online and use the Web-based TitlePLUS applications without requiring any specific software training.
  • Simplified e-commerce: The online TitlePLUS programs automatically debit a lawyer's bank account or credit card, depending on pre-determined arrangements, thus eliminating the need to send cheques or monitor account balances as is the case with other service providers.
  • Around the clock access: Because they are Internet-based, lawyers can access TitlePLUS programs anytime, from anywhere, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Using a Web-based processing system for real estate transactions opens the door to easy access to TitlePLUS for lawyers across Canada. TitlePLUS is currently available in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and Manitoba.
