LAWPRO, DIVORCEmate to go their separate ways

Adobe PDF document PDF file for download (Size: 46KB)

Toronto, ON, October 29, 2004: Lawyers' Professional Indemnity Company (LAWPRO) and DIVORCEmate Software Inc. today announced their intention to end their four-year partnership arrangement, effective October 29, 2004.

The companies joined forces in 2000 to develop a matrimonial law software package that would help lawyers address the increased complexity of family law practice, and which reflected LAWPRO's interest in technology as a risk management tool. Among the many fundamental changes to matrimonial law facing family law lawyers at the time were: changes to pension and income tax legislation, same sex marriages, the unification of family courts, new family law forms and numerous precedent-setting cases.

In late 2003, DIVORCEmate released Precedents+, a widely praised software product that incorporates risk management measures into a streamlined process for creating draft separation agreements.

"Our collaboration with DIVORCEmate has served the legal profession well, and has been productive for both parties," said Michelle Strom, President and CEO of LAWPRO, in announcing that LAWPRO would sell its 20 per cent equity interest in DIVORCEmate. "Through Precedents+, we've demonstrated again how the Bar can leverage technology to be more effective and competitive in law practice."

"Precedents+ represents the realization of most of our shared goals," added DIVORCEmate President Mark Harris. "The expertise and strategic management that LAWPRO brought to the table were not only instrumental in this product's success, but will serve DIVORCEmate well as we continue to develop additional software programs that meet the evolving needs of the family law profession."

Lawyers' Professional Indemnity Company (LAWPRO) is a wholly Canadian-owned insurer providing a diverse range of insurance-related programs, services, and resources, including title insurance, to support the legal community in numerous jurisdictions across Canada.

DIVORCEmate Software Inc. is a privately held software company, whose products serve Canadian family law professionals including: lawyers; members of the judiciary and courthouse libraries; accountants; law professors; mediators; community collages; CAW Legal Plan; family law clinics and shelters; and numerous government and special interest groups. Its products currently are licensed to approximately 5,000 Canadian family law professionals, the majority of which are in Ontario and B.C.
